After more than 20 years of kitesurfing in southern South Africa, Kevin Langeree knew it was time for a new adventure. With a five-person kite crew and three four-wheel-drive vehicles, he headed north, following the West Coast. There was no fixed destination, only one guiding idea: stay as flexible as the wind.

That uncertainty is exactly what made the trip so special, never knowing where they would spend the night, letting themselves drift with the wind, the landscape, and places that often did not even have a name. At first, the wind was not on the kiters’ side, but there was no shortage of things to do. The crew raced down dunes, explored remote beaches, and slept in the sand beside a campfire.
When the wind finally returned, the excitement was palpable. “Everyone completely lost it,” Kevin recalls. And combined with the feeling of being the only people on an endless stretch of beach, it was pure freedom. This is a sharp contrast to the well-known kitesurfing spots around Cape Town, such as Blouberg, where, on good days, thousands of kiters share the water. Along the route north, countless spots awaited where the crew had beaches and landscapes entirely to themselves. “There was something truly unique about it,” Kevin says. The trip ended with a sunset session that brought everything together perfectly and made it, for Kevin, “the most unforgettable part of the entire journey.”
Kitesurfing is more than a sport. It connects people, brings them closer to nature, and teaches them to let go—to accept that not everything can be controlled, just like the wind.
